The reality in the occupied Palestinian territories is grim. For decades, Israel has systematically committed acts of terror against Palestinians: killings, mass arrests, torture, home demolitions, and collective punishment. These actions, repeatedly documented by human rights organizations, reveal a deliberate policy of oppression and control.
1948: Nakba – The Catastrophe
Ethnic Cleansing and Massacres: Over 700,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced from their homes during the establishment of Israel. Villages were depopulated, and massacres such as Deir Yassin resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Palestinians.
1967: Six-Day War and Occupation
Occupation of Palestinian Territories: Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, beginning a military occupation that continues today.
Settler Colonization: Following the occupation, Israel began establishing settlements in occupied territories, considered illegal under international law.
1987–1993: First Intifada
Mass Arrests and Torture: Israeli forces conducted widespread arrests, many Palestinians were tortured or ill-treated in detention.
Use of Live Ammunition: Protests were met with excessive force, including shooting unarmed civilians.
2000–2005: Second Intifada
Operation Defensive Shield (2002): Large-scale military incursions into Palestinian cities led to significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction.
Targeted Assassinations: Israel implemented targeted killings, resulting in the deaths of leaders and civilians alike.
2005–2007: Gaza Disengagement and Blockade
Disengagement Plan (2005): Israel withdrew from Gaza but retained control over borders, airspace, and maritime access.
Blockade of Gaza (2007–present): Following Hamas' electoral victory, Israel imposed a strict blockade causing humanitarian crises, including shortages of food, medicine, and electricity.
2008–2021: Military Operations and Escalations
Operation Cast Lead (2008–2009): Over 1,400 Palestinian deaths, many civilians. UN Fact-Finding Mission indicated possible war crimes.
Operation Pillar of Defense (2012) and Protective Edge (2014): Airstrikes and ground incursions caused civilian casualties and destruction.
Great March of Return (2018–2019): Peaceful Gaza border protests met with live fire, killing over 200 and injuring thousands.
2023–2025: Escalation and Systemic Atrocities
October 2023 Conflict: Extensive Israeli airstrikes on Gaza resulted in over 61,000 Palestinian deaths by 2025. UN and human rights organizations condemned these as potential war crimes.
Sde Teiman Detention Facility: At least 135 mutilated bodies returned to Gaza showed evidence of torture, sexual abuse, and extrajudicial killings.
Blockade and Starvation: Ongoing restrictions have caused widespread shortages, preventable deaths, and a humanitarian crisis.
Attacks on Journalists and Humanitarian Workers: Israeli airstrikes targeted media offices, hospitals, and aid workers, further worsening the crisis.
Systemic Patterns and International Complicity
The repeated nature of these atrocities demonstrates a deliberate policy of occupation, displacement, and suppression of Palestinian rights. Despite UN and human rights reports, there is little accountability. Powerful allies shield Israel from consequences, normalizing violence and human rights violations.
