Rome — Paolo Zampolli, a longtime friend of President Donald Trump who is now serving as U.S. special envoy for global partnerships, has suggested that Italy replace Iran in this year's World Cup.

Zampolli made the proposal during a meeting with Italian sports officials, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The quadrennial soccer tournament will be held starting in June in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Iran was initially invited to participate in the World Cup but withdrew due to concerns over travel restrictions imposed by the US government.

Zampolli's suggestion has sparked debate among Italian football fans and officials, with some calling for Italy to take advantage of the opportunity to compete on the global stage.
