Meta is planning to lay off around 10% of its employees, or approximately 8,000 people, in May, according to a memo from the company's chief people officer. The cuts follow significant investments in AI and will also see the closure of around 6,000 open roles.

The layoffs are part of Meta's effort to run the company more efficiently and offset its investments. Affected staffers will be notified on May 20th.

Meta has been investing heavily in AI, including hiring top talent and building data centers. The company forecast a significant increase in capital expenditures for 2026 to support these efforts.

The layoffs follow earlier cuts affecting hundreds of employees in various teams and divisions.
