A critically endangered Sumatran orangutan has been filmed using a canopy bridge to cross a road in North Sumatra, Indonesia.

The 350 orangutans in the area were split into two populations by the Lagan-Pagindar road, which made it impossible for them to cross naturally.

Conservationists built the bridge with local government help and had been waiting for an orangutan to use it for two years.

A young male Sumatran orangutan was filmed edging onto the bridge before making its way across, pausing halfway to look down at the road below.

The species is critically endangered, with only 14,000 individuals left in the wild. The successful crossing of the bridge offers hope for conservation efforts.
