Angel Roman Mendoza Lopez, 13, died over the weekend after being hit by a car while riding his electric scooter in Pomona, California.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when Angel attempted to cross the street and was struck by a southbound vehicle. According to authorities, he was not wearing a helmet at the time.
Pomona Police Department Cpl. Neil Woelfel said that another vehicle parked along the curb blocked the views of both Angel and the driver, making it difficult for them to see each other.
Angel was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital and later transferred to Children's Hospital of Orange County where he died.
The incident is one of several reported accidents involving electric scooters in recent months. In August, a 9-year-old boy was killed and his older brother injured when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding electric scooters in Koreatown.
Last year, Lauren Turner, a 19-year-old Cal State Fullerton women's soccer player, died nearly six weeks after she and a teammate were hit by a box truck while riding electric scooters on a road near campus.
