Itron, an American energy technology company, has confirmed it was hit by a cyberattack in mid-April and that hackers gained access to some of its systems.

The company did not specify the type of attack or whether ransomware was deployed, but said it subsequently expelled the hackers and has seen no signs of further intrusions.

Itron notified law enforcement of the breach and activated its contingency plans and data backups, saying its operations have 'continued in all material respects.' However, the company warned that it may need to make subsequent legal filings and regulatory notifications.

The company provides technology for managing energy consumption of grids, including water, gas, and electricity supplies, and has thousands of customers worldwide.
