The incident occurred when Eric Chiu's stepmother witnessed the bear from a distance and recorded the encounter on Instagram.
Cort Klopping, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, recommends that people make themselves look larger and not block the bear's exit if they encounter one in the wild.
The hiker was unharmed in the incident, which was described as a 'false charge' by Chiu.
