OpenAI has launched Advanced Account Security (AAS), a set of opt-in protections designed to safeguard high-value individuals, including political dissidents, journalists, researchers, and elected officials. The program is available to anyone who wants it.

The AAS features two new security key products from digital security provider Yubico, which have been linked to ChatGPT accounts. The partnership aims to protect users from the growing threat of phishing attacks.

Security keys are small hardware devices that can be tied to digital accounts and activated through a computer's USB ports. They contain unique cryptographic identifiers that allow only the person in possession of the key to log into a connected account.

The threat of phished ChatGPT accounts may seem abstract, but there is a growing body of literature showing that bad actors are increasingly targeting chatbot users. Cybercriminals seek extortion-worthy information and, given the intimate nature of most chatbot conversations, there is plenty of fodder for both enterprise and personal-level users.

OpenAI's AAS program follows its announcement of a new framework for digital defense and comes as the AI industry places greater emphasis on digital security. Several weeks ago, Anthropic announced a new cybersecurity model called Mythos.
