An AMR ambulance was struck head-on by a Chevy Cruze while responding to an emergency in Salinas, California, on Saturday night. The driver of the Cruze, Armando Ortiz Mendoza, 26, allegedly had a blood alcohol content of over twice the legal limit.
The ambulance was traveling east on East Boronda Road with its lights and siren activated when it was struck by the Cruze, which crossed into oncoming traffic. The driver and two emergency medical professionals inside the ambulance were injured and taken to local hospitals.
A breathalyzer test showed Mendoza's blood alcohol content was .20%, and a beer can was found at the scene. He was booked into jail on suspicion of felony DUI.
The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence, with police urging people to make safe choices and never drive impaired.
