US and Chinese trade negotiators resumed talks on Friday amid rising tensions over Taiwan and Beijing's human rights record.

The talks, which began in the morning, are focused on resolving outstanding issues from their previous agreements, including tariffs and intellectual property protections.

China has been pushing back against US demands for greater access to its markets and stricter enforcement of intellectual property laws, while Washington is seeking concessions on agricultural products and other trade barriers.

The negotiations come as the Biden administration considers a range of options to counter China's growing military presence in the Taiwan Strait, including increased military aid to Taipei and joint exercises with allies in the region.

China has been increasingly assertive in its claims over Taiwan, which it considers a rogue province, and has launched a campaign to isolate the island diplomatically and economically.
