California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a settlement with General Motors over privacy concerns related to the company's OnStar program.
The settlement alleges that GM sold data on hundreds of thousands of Californians, including names, contact information, geolocation data, and driving behavior data, to data brokers Verisk Analytics and LexisNexis Risk Solutions.
GM made around $20 million from the data sales, but Bonta's office said the data did not lead to increased insurance prices in California due to state laws prohibiting insurers from using driving data to set rates.
As part of the settlement, GM will pay $12.75 million in civil penalties and stop selling driving data to consumer reporting agencies for five years.
The company has also agreed to delete any remaining driver data within 180 days or obtain consent from customers and request that Lexis and Verisk do the same.
